Master’s in Theology
The Master’s curriculum of Theology offers students a choice between two specialist fields: Theology and Religious Education. Admissions prerequisites for the specialist fields differ somewhat. For theology the student has to have a Bachelor in Theology with the major specialty in theology or at least the minor specialty in theology from the University of Tartu or a Bachelor-level education from another theological school in Estonia. For the specialty of religious education the specialty in Religious Studies of the Bachelor of Theology also qualifies. For foreign students who wish to apply, the admission decision is made on an individual basis, depending on the content of their previous studies.
The specialty of religious education is a teacher-training programme designed to fill the requirements of the Estonian school system. The specialty of theology offers students a flexible way of focusing on a chosen research field of theology: practical or systematic theology for future church workers, and biblical studies for future bible translators etc. Interdisciplinary practical research is also encouraged – in addition to the classical Master’s thesis, there is also the option to carry out a practical project and in addition take project-related courses from any faculty of the University of Tartu.
In practice, most of the theology students are already working in churches or in state institutions and the study schedules are organised in such a way that it is possible to study and work at the same time.
